Clean water changes everything

Access to clean drinking water is something many of us take for granted. For families in the Kimagandura community in Laikipia, it used to mean a daily walk of 8 kilometres to the nearest borehole.

Every day, women spent up to four hours collecting just 20 litres of water for drinking, cooking and washing before carrying it home on their backs.

At the same time, the region was experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades. After more than two years with almost no rain, over 90% of the livestock had died from hunger and thirst.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we raised €24,000 to drill a new borehole for the community.

Following a hydrogeological survey in April 2022, drilling began on 30 May. On 17 June 2022, the new borehole was officially opened.

Today, hundreds of families have access to safe, clean water close to home. Children can spend more time in school, women no longer have to walk for hours every day, and the community has a reliable water source for people, livestock and projects such as our community garden.

Sometimes, one borehole can change an entire community.
